A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

It is our great honor to welcome you to Dallas Baptist University. DBU is a nationally ranked, comprehensive, Christ-centered, global university, with a mission to produce servant leaders through the integration of faith and learning. We are thrilled to be an educational enterprise home to more than 4,400 students, representing 59 countries around the world. Here, you will discover a community of servant leaders whose heart is to teach and care for others while also producing research in a myriad of academic disciplines. We embrace the premise that all truth is God’s truth, and together, we seek knowledge for the sake of making a bold impact in the world as transformers of culture. We believe our world is in desperate need of thoughtful Christian leaders with the ability to creatively solve complex problems while uniquely engaging culture through biblical truth. Our graduates are serving in nearly every vocational context. Whether it be as Christian doctors, lawyers, educators, scientists, businessmen, politicians, or numerous other professions, we understand that our students are diverse in their callings, yet united in purpose. MISSION The mission of Dallas Baptist University is to provide Christ-centered quality higher education in the arts, sciences, and professional studies at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to traditional age and adult students in order to produce servant leaders who have the ability to integrate faith and learning through their respective callings. VISION The vision of Dallas Baptist University is to build a great Christian university that is pleasing to God by producing Christ-centered servant leaders who are transforming the world. OUR HISTORY

For more than 100 years, Dallas Baptist University has been producing servant leaders who seek to impact the world for the cause of Christ. Overcoming the impossible has been our story.

DECATUR In 1898, a group of North Texas Baptists

established Decatur Baptist College as the first two-year institution of higher education in Texas. Initially purposed as a feeder school for other universities, Decatur Baptist sought to bridge the gap between Texas’ public education system and larger colleges by allowing students to complete preparatory work along the way to earning a bachelor’s degree. Over the years, Decatur Baptist quickly gained a reputation for its caring community and focus on a Christ-centered, quality education. Even through the challenging times of

the Great Depression and World War II, DBC was recognized for its faithful perseverance. In fact, it was during these challenging times that leaders from the Dallas Baptist Association stepped up to implement important changes that would save the institution from closing its doors. Under wise leadership, the college was relocated to the southern foothills of Dallas and was transformed from a junior college into a four-year institution. Dallas Baptist College came to fruition in the fall of 1965.

DALLAS Dallas Baptist College quickly developed a strong presence in the southern sector of Dallas. With the recruiting efforts of Dr. Fred White, the first semester of classes yielded 945 students. Five years later, DBC graduated its first bachelor’s degree students. The college began to grow with the additions of a new gymnasium, library, and dormitories. By 1985, the institution added its first graduate degree and changed its name from Dallas Baptist College to Dallas Baptist University. Unfortunately, the University acquired what seemed like a perpetual amount of debt. This debt and the effects of low enrollment prevented the University from developing any more of its campus resources. DBU had to rely on faithful donors like Mary C. Crowley, and the continual support of the Baptist General Convention of Texas in order to keep its doors open. Even with this support, financial problems continued to impact the University for years. These

difficult times, however, began to change in 1988 with the election of Dr. Gary Cook as the fifth president of DBU. Throughout Dr. Cook’s three decades as President, the University experienced growth and stability as enrollment and endowment increased, buildings were constructed, and new academic programs began. At the heart of the change was the establishment of the DBU Prayer Ministry as the DBU Family sought to turn the whole of the life of the University over to the Lord in prayer. This same spirit of prayer and reliance on the Lord continued through the election of DBU’s sixth President, Dr. Adam C. Wright, in 2016. Since he began his tenure in leadership, Dr. Wright has maintained the tradition of devotion and excellence as DBU seeks to be a global, Christ-centered university that is pleasing to God.

WE ARE THE PATRIOTS In 1991, DBU adopted the American Patriot as its official mascot, and the official University colors became red, white, and blue. A Patriot is faithful. A Patriot seeks justice. A Patriot is fair, moderate, and genuine, both in public and in private. A Patriot has an inspiring presence that brings out the best in others. Above all, the ideal Patriot demonstrates a selfless, courageous commitment to his or her fundamental beliefs and is not afraid of change. DBU chose Colonial patriotism for its identity because these qualities blend seamlessly with the DBU mission to produce servant leaders who can integrate faith into their spheres of activity. Servant leadership is an inner spiritual commitment to the welfare of those being led that is empowered by responsiveness to their needs and defined by a clear vision. These are the same qualities represented by the ideal Patriot.

DEVELOPING SERVANT LEADERS

DBU’s mission is to develop servant leaders—graduates whose hearts are marked by service and a desire to change the world. Students are challenged throughout their time at DBU to understand their calling through the prism of service. Whether they are studying history, medicine, political science, psychology, business, or mathematics, each degree plan includes service-learning courses in which they apply their knowledge in the classroom to practical help within their community. In addition, every incoming traditional-age undergraduate student is required to spend 18 hours doing community service during their first two semesters, and each student receiving the Christian Service Scholarship or the Christian Leadership Scholarship is required to maintain those service hours throughout the course of their degree at DBU. Beyond the individual student, groups, such as DBU Greek Life, the Student Government Association, and other student-led organizations include service projects as a part of their organization’s mission. Also, Student Life and the Athletics Department partake in regular service projects throughout the year. Every student at DBU is provided the opportunity to receive hands-on, practical experience in serving their community. During the 2018-19 school year, DBU students totaled 165,000 hours in community service.

GLOBAL REACH STUDENTS SERVE AND STUDY ABROAD

In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus commands His followers to “go and make disciples of all nations.” This Great Commission compels DBU to engage the world for the Glory of God through a variety of means. Every year, DBU sends mission teams abroad to serve in orphanages, schools, and churches, helping local Christians share the Gospel. Most notably, the DBU Athletics Department for the past ten years has sent teams to various international locations as a part of the Global Sports Mission Initiative, which provides unique opportunities for athletes to combine their love of the game with service to others. In addition, students have the chance to earn course credit through various study abroad trips to locations such as Bangladesh, Israel, England, or Japan. For example, DBU’s Business As Mission program challenges students to take the business knowledge they have learned in the classroom and help individuals establish successful business models internationally. On campus, students can get to know more than 600 students from around the world and discover global engagement in their own backyard.

CAMPUS LIFE DBU provides more than just an education. University Hill is a home away from home for students and offers them a community of fellow believers who can walk beside them throughout this transitional period in their lives. At the heart of a DBU education is Jesus. Every course is designed to integrate Christian faith with learning, believing that Christ is the Lord of all things, including the Lord of academics. Professors mentor and challenge students to see their academic discipline through the light of the Gospel and to discover how their career path can be a unique calling from God to serve others and bring Him glory. Beyond the classroom, students are challenged to deepen their Christian faith through chapel services, which are held three times a week, discipleship programs, Bible studies, service and mission trips, and one-on-one mentoring with faculty and staff members. In addition, students have the opportunity to join student-led organizations, such as DBU Greek Life, which creates an intense community whose focus is on service and discipleship within the context of brotherhood and sisterhood. These groups study together, pray together, and have fun together. DBU Student Life provides a variety of community- building events throughout the semester, including events such as Spring Sing, Pepsi Breaks, intramural games, musical concerts, movies on the lawn, and the Great Pumpkin Chase.

CAMPUS LIFE

DBU’s Division II sports compete in the Heartland Conference and have maintained years of consistent success, with DBU Cross Country and Track dominating the field for the past decade and Women’s Soccer ranked consistently among the top in the nation. A variety of Club Sports are also offered at DBU, including Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Bass Fishing, and spirit teams consisting of Cheerleading and the Patriettes dance team. These groups compete against other area teams and national tournaments, allowing students to continue to pursue their passions while in college.

In addition to these Athletic teams, DBU’s Rec Life provides several competitive outlets for the student body through intramural sports. These games include flag football, basketball, softball, volleyball, and soccer, as well as fun events such as Greek Games, Ultimate Frisbee, the Turkey Trot, Dodge Ball, and Ping-Pong. From engaging worship services to exciting baseball games, from special community gatherings to spirited intramural games, there is never a dull moment on University Hill.

For those students who love sports, DBU has an incredible Athletics Department that competes in the NCAA at both the Division I and Division II levels. DBU Patriot Baseball is annually ranked among the top 25 Division I programs in the nation, competing in the Missouri Valley Conference and consistently receiving invitations to the NCAA National Tournament. Each year, multiple Patriots are drafted by Major League Baseball, most notably Ben Zobrist, who is a two-time All Star, two-time World Series Champion, and 2016 World Series MVP.

CHRISTIAN SYMBOLS

FISHERS OF MEN Two statues entitled Fishers of Men, sculpted by Max Greiner, Jr., stand overlooking both exits from the DBU campus. They depict Jesus standing tall, calm, and commanding, holding a fishing net. The image is a reminder of the Matthew 4 passage as Jesus called Simon Peter and Andrew to follow Him and become fishers of men. Both statues have cast stone signs behind them displaying the penetrating question, “Will you follow me?” to all students, faculty, staff, and visitors to University Hill. The statue along the west entrance is dedicated in memory of the late Edith Bond, former DBU Dean of Students and a Trustee. The second is located along the east entrance and was named in memory of the late Dr. Kermit Whiteaker, who served as a DBU trustee and was given by his wife, Dr. Bettye Whiteaker-Hurt, who is also a former trustee.

THE DIVINE SERVANT When Dr. Gary Cook arrived as president of DBU in 1988, the first sermon he gave laid out his vision for the school’s focus—servant leadership. Five years later, DBU dedicated the Divine Servant statue by Max Greiner, Jr. This image, depicting the story of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet, symbolizes not only the selfless sacrifice of our Savior, but also the call for His followers to serve likewise. The statue was donated by the late Ira Craft and his wife, Betty, long- time friends of Dr. Cook who symbolized servant leadership to him while he was a college intern in their hometown of Columbia, South Carolina.

PATTY AND BO PILGRIM CHAPEL The Patty and Bo Pilgrim Chapel was created to honor God. Entering the Pilgrim Chapel sanctuary, one sees a stained glass image of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane the night that He was betrayed. Over His shoulder stands the Holy City of Jerusalem, waiting to receive its coming King. At the back of the sanctuary is a beautiful piece of art reminiscent of the Rose Stained Glass Window in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The design within each petal depicts one of the twelve disciples, along with symbols of their ministry or martyrdom. At the center of the glass is the cross, draped with a scarlet cloth, representing the foundation of our faith. The Word of God is on display on the ceiling beams in the sanctuary, reminding visitors of a few of the passages that are especially meaningful to DBU. The cross takes its prominent position—centered at the front—symbolizing the supreme sacrifice that Christ made to redeem us from our sins.

CHRISTIAN SYMBOLS

THE GREAT COMMISSION In 2001, DBU dedicated the Great Commission sculpture by Max Greiner, Jr. Located between the Mahler Student Center and the Pilgrim Chapel, students, faculty, and staff pass it daily. This monument, which is named in honor of the late Dr. Charles Shellenberger and his wife, Dorothy, both former trustees, not only reflects DBU’s commitment to educate and care for more than 600 international students every year, but also serves as a reminder of the command from Jesus to go and make disciples of all nations. The globe is resting on two open Bibles. On one side are displayed John 3:16 and Matthew 24:35, and the other contains the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20, ending with the comforting words, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” “CALLED TO PRAY” STATUE For Dr. Gary Cook’s 25th anniversary as president of DBU, the trustees dedicated a new statue on campus. The statue, given by Joan Trew, sits in the midst of a small prayer garden in front of the Mahler Student Center and is a reminder of the need to turn all of our lives over to the Lord in prayer. The praying man’s Bible is open to Jeremiah 29:11-13, DBU’s theme verse and a wonderful passage expressing the confidence that can be found in life when we seek the Lord with all of our heart.

THE DBU SEAL Sitting in front of the Patty and Bo Pilgrim Chapel is the DBU seal. Cast in bronze, this image is displayed not only here, but also throughout the campus, on University documents, diplomas, advertisements, and countless other places. The seal contains four words: Character, Truth, Faith, and Knowledge. These traits make up the essential elements of a DBU education, and at the center of it all is the cross of Christ.

JOHN 3:16 ETERNAL LIFE GLOBE

The Jeannette and Cletys Sadler Global Mission Center contains the International Admissions Department, the Baptist Student Ministry offices, the Student Affairs offices, and the offices for the Master of Arts in Global Leadership program. As a fitting reminder of the building’s purpose, a sculpture entitled John 3:16 Eternal Life Globe sits in front. On each side of the eight-sided pedestal at the base of the globe is a cast-stone rendering of John 3:16 in eight languages: Chinese (Mandarin), Chinese (Cantonese), English, French, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, and Portuguese.

ELLIS PRAYER GARDEN The Lou Morton Ellis Prayer Garden is the largest of several prayer gardens on the DBU campus where visitors can take a break for a quiet prayer and reflective meditation while enjoying the beauty of God’s creation. It has two koi ponds, connected by a 40-foot waterfall, beautiful flowers and plants, and a cross that sits at the top, providing a peaceful location for prayer and Bible study.

PARTNERING WITH CHURCHES

CHURCH MATCHING GIFT PROGRAM For more than twenty years, DBU has partnered with churches around the world to provide scholarship funds for incredible students. Currently, as churches provide scholarship money for their selected students, DBU will match dollar for dollar up to $3,500 per academic year, doubling that amount to potentially become $7,000 of aid for individuals seeking to fulfill their academic calling.
